Purebred Shih Tzu Dogs are Also known as the 'Lion Dog'

APPEARANCE The purebred Shih Tzu dogs are a small compact dog with a, longer than taller body and short, strong legs. They have a broad head with big dark eyes that will melt your heart but, there is a downside to those beautiful eyes; they require daily checking to ensure that there is no build up of mucus. Their protruding eyes can easily become infected, if not kept clean. They have a short, square muzzle with a small flat nose and, a definite, and very cute, under-bite. The ears hang down and are covered with their beautiful long hair; Like all the breeds with the 'Low-set' ears, they should be checked and cleaned regularly. This purebred dog carries its, long haired, tail up over its back and the thick double coat flows down to the floor which, when left long, requires daily brushing. Many owners opt to have their dogs clipped regularly for easier maintenance; The Shih Tzu comes in a range of different colour combination's and their body size is from 20 cm to 28 cm. CHARACTERISTICS
The purebred Shih Tzu dogs are said to be amongst the "most ancient of dog breeds" and that the breed "was almost completely wiped out during the Chinese Revolution. Seven males and seven females were saved and today, all Shih Tzu dogs can be traced back to one of these dogs" (quote from Wikipedia). They are known as the 'Lion Dog' (Shih Tzu means 'lion' in Chinese) and they can also be referred to as 'Chinese Temple Dogs' because they were owned and revered by Chinese royalty for many years, and although the Chinese have claimed the breed as their own, it is more likely that their origin is of the 'tibetan dogs'.
EXERCISE
The purebred Shih Tzu dogs will benefit, both physically and mentally, with regular exercise; they love and look forward to their daily romp and often will stop and lie down when they get weary. The breed does have respiratory problems, caused by nasal passage deformities, and these little dogs suffer with overheating in high temperatures, so don't ask them to do too much at one time. It is, also, essential that you don't overfeed your loved one because they are prone to put on weight, very quickly. Given a good healthy lifestyle this little dog will have a life span between 12 - 16 years.

The first pair of purebred dogs were imported into England in 1930 and it was not until post World War 11 that this, ancient 'Lion Dog' made its way into the US. Today this adorable little dog is well known and loved, world wide for its engaging Shih Tzu personality and it's loyal, loving companionship.
